The National Weather Service operates in the United States of America. It was established in the 1870, but back then it was impossible to properly predict the weather conditions. So they usually just analyzed past weather conditions and tried to predict the future ones. This was of course until the invention of the weather radar in the middle of the 20th century. When the weather radar was invented the possibility to predict the weather conditions was huge and a lot of companies tried to build one on their own or buy an already constructed one and improve and develop it as well as they could.

However back in the past they still were possible to determine the possible weather conditions, but it was very dangerous and not so accurate. The National Weather Service launched piloted planes and sent them to scout the clouds and to collect information about the weather conditions so that they can calculate the chances of storms, rains, snows or just sunny weather. But after the end of World War II the weather radar was invented and they started using it. The National Weather Service is responsible for bringing the weather, climate and hydrologic forecasts to the population of the United States of America as well as for warning the in case of danger of a natural disaster.

Of course such a big organization which covers the weather conditions in the entire United States of America doesn’t use just one weather forecasting central. They have more than 120 forecasting centers which are equipped with the latest gear in weather predicting and are getting improved which every passing day. All of these centers are responsible to follow the weather conditions for a certain area of America. They must also properly and on time warn the citizens in case of a danger of a natural disaster. Due to their advanced technology, they don’t only use weather radars, but also planes which don’t have a pilot and are controlled manually from distance. These planes are sent to different areas so that more accurate data about the weather conditions can be gathered thus allowing the National Weather Service to give more detailed and accurate information about the future weather.

The National Weather Service is a very important organization of the United States government. They don’t only help us by telling us the future weather, but also are obligated to warn us when there is a danger of natural disasters so that we can react adequately and prevent harm to us and our property. It can determine their future and what they are planning to do, because for instance you can’t plan going to the beach when knowing that there will be rain. Weather radars aren’t a very new technology. They were first used after the end of World War II. During the WWII many scientists noticed strange echoes on the radars and these echoes were caused by rain drops or snow flakes. So after the war many of the scientists that noticed such anomalies started developing the weather radar. Of course in the beginning the weather radar wasn’t very accurate and trustful, but with time the technology got better and upgraded and so the forecasts were much more reliable. The first weather radars were just able to determine where the storm was and this was all, but the new ones can determine its type, motion type and its future intensity and location.

Weather radars work by sending microwave radiations which is grouped in pulses. The lengths of these microwave radiation waves are from 1 to 10 cm and are quite bigger than the usual rain drops and ice particles. Due to this variation in size the pulses will bounce off from all the small particles which are of interest to the scientists. Depending on the area where the weather radar will be used there are different radars which send different lengths of waves. For instance short wave radars are preferred for areas where there is occasional weak rain or weak snow falls, because the short waves easily detect smaller particles. The best weather radar type is the one with the 10cm long waves, but it is also the most expensive. It has the best resolution and can give the most proper position, type and motion of the storm.

However don’t think that the radar just shows the scientists what type is the storm and at what type it will be over a certain part of the world. There are many complex calculations which must be made using the data from the weather radar. So the people working with the weather radar must be qualified and experienced so that they can find and use the correct information when calculating the height, distance and type of the storm.

Weather radars are surely one of the most important parts of the national weather service. The good weather radar may not only allow us to have information about the future weather and if any storms are expected, but also save lives in case a tornado or a hurricane is predicted. It is very important that the weather radar used is frequently checked and fixed if there are any problems, because bad condition will surely lead to false results and information. Weather radars are surely to get better and more accurate with time and soon they’ll be able to determine everything about a storm by themselves, this way they will not only make our life easier, but also maybe save lives in case of a heavy storm.
