Each moment, all the power and excitement of this final demonstrate of the tour, was captured in high-definition for this extraordinary Blu-ray experience. The ’70s and ’80s rule as two of the most well-known bands from that era join forces on Chicago/Earth Wind & Fire – Reside at the Greek Theatre, a two-disc, virtually 3-hour concert recorded in Los Angeles in 2004. These groups scored dozens of hits in their heydays, and if neither has come up with much of anything at all that’s new in the previous two decades, the sold-out audience at the Greek Theatre could hardly care much less. The two Chicago and Earth, Wind & Fire, have soldiered on in spite of important personnel modifications over the years (Chicago bassist-singer Peter Cetera and EWF founder Maurice White are lengthy gone, and significantly missed) right here they complete energetic and tasteful versions of anything from “Make Me Smile,” “I’m a Guy,” and “Saturday in the Park” (Chicago) to “That’s the Way of the World,” “Fantasy,” and “Serpentine Fire” (EWF), amongst many others, to rapturous response. Nothing at all too fascinating about all of that–in reality, it is a bit like witnessing a couple of really skilled tribute bands at operate–but there are a handful of surprises, as when Chicago keyboardist-singer Bill Champlin will take the lead on “After the Enjoy Has Gone” (which he co-wrote) and EWF singer Philip Bailey returns the favor on Chicago’s “If You Leave Me Now.” The highlights are the first and last portions of the present, when the two bands (complete with horn sections) share the stage for “September,” “25 or six to 4,” “Shining Star,” and much more, displaying genuine joy at executing together and producing a large, infectious sound delivered with higher definition visuals and digital audio. –Sam Graham
